Ever wondered what it’s like to be a professional cat sitter in one of the UK’s most charming cities? It’s not just cuddles and treats (though there’s plenty of that too!) - being a cat sitter requires trust, planning, and a deep understanding of feline behaviour. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day caring for Cambridge’s cats.
7:30am – Morning Routine & First Visits
The day starts early. After checking my schedule and reviewing each cat’s care notes, I pack my essentials: treats, toys, keys, hand sanitiser, and a fully charged phone. First stop might be a pair of sleepy Ragdolls who love a gentle brush and breakfast at exactly 8:00am. I top up water, clean the litter tray, and sit for a quiet moment while they nuzzle into my lap.
10:00am – Playtime & Personality Checks
Mid-morning often includes a more playful bunch - maybe a high-energy Bengal who needs a 10-minute feather wand session to burn off steam. I watch for subtle behaviour cues: is the cat eating well? Using the litter box normally? Do they seem relaxed or a little out of sorts? Every cat is different, and part of my role is to know what “normal” looks like for each one.
12:30pm – Updates for Owners
After a few visits, I pause to send photo and video updates to clients. A sleepy cat curled up in their favourite chair or a mid-pounce action shot always brings a smile. Owners appreciate knowing everything’s going smoothly - and that their pet is getting real, personalised attention.
2:00pm – Vet Trip or Special Care
Some days include a vet visit. I collect a cat carrier from a client’s home and carefully coax their cat inside using calming techniques and familiar items. During the journey and appointment, I talk softly, keeping the cat as calm as possible. Once home, I update the client with a full report.
4:00pm – Afternoon Visits & Enrichment
Afternoon visits are often for solo cats who prefer a slower pace. I might rotate toys, hide treats for a little scavenger fun, or just sit quietly while they snooze beside me. Enrichment isn’t just about play - it’s about understanding what makes a cat feel content.
6:30pm – Final Checks & Lockups
Evening visits tend to be dinner-time routines. I ensure everything is clean, fresh, and exactly how the owner left it. I double-check doors, lights, and alarms before saying goodbye until tomorrow. Many cats are already tucked up, ready for another night in the comfort of their own home.
Why It Matters
Cat sitting is more than pet care - it’s peace of mind. While owners are away, I’m not just feeding and cleaning; I’m watching for signs of stress, offering companionship, and keeping routines consistent. For cats, that makes all the difference.
